Wrinkles – why they appear, and how you can care for your skin

Wrinkles – why they appear, and how you can care for your skin

Wrinkles are the fine lines or folds in the skin that often give an uneven appearance. They typically appear on the face and hands, where the skin is most exposed, and although wrinkles are a natural part of life, many people experience them as unwanted. There are countless reasons why we develop wrinkles, but common to them all is that the skin’s elasticity and collagen gradually decrease. As elasticity fades and the skin loses volume, lines become more pronounced.

The most fundamental cause of wrinkles is, of course, aging. As we get older, the skin undergoes significant changes. Skin cells in the outer layer renew more slowly, making it harder for the skin to regenerate. The outer layer becomes thinner, more fragile, and papery, while at the same time losing its ability to retain moisture. Dryness amplifies the lines, making wrinkles even more visible.

Another important factor is the loss of elasticity. The skin can be compared to a rubber band that gradually loosens and loses its resilience. The more stretching and strain the skin is exposed to throughout life, the less elasticity it retains. This intensifies the natural signs of aging and leads to more visible folds.

Wrinkles are also caused by repeated muscle movements. When we frown, smile, or express emotions, we create folds in the skin. In the areas where muscles are most active – typically around the forehead and mouth – lines will gradually deepen and eventually become permanent. That’s why facial expressions often leave clear marks over time.

Aging also affects the skin’s supply of nutrients. When we lose fat cells in the deeper layers of skin, the natural filler that keeps it smooth, plump, and youthful disappears. This makes the skin thinner, and wrinkles become significantly more pronounced. Smoking and unhealthy habits can accelerate this process, depriving the skin of vital nutrients even faster.

Another major cause of wrinkles is sun damage. Repeated sunburns damage the skin’s structure and can be difficult to repair. Overexposure to the sun’s rays makes the skin build a thickened layer as protection – what is often called leathery skin. This type of damage can leave the skin rough, uneven, and permanently marked by deep lines.

Although we cannot stop the aging process, there is much we can do to slow its progression and preserve the vitality of the skin. Regular moisturizing is essential to keep the skin elastic and hydrated. A healthy, nutrient-rich diet combined with plenty of water helps the skin regenerate from within. It is equally important to avoid factors that damage the skin – including smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of sleep. Rest and recovery give the skin and muscles time to renew themselves, contributing to a fresher appearance.

At MOL&B Copenhagen, we have developed skincare that supports the skin in maintaining its moisture, strength, and elasticity. Our products work in synergy with the skin, providing nourishment and protection without overloading it. With a consistent routine of cleansing, toner, oil, serum, and regenerating cream, the skin can be deeply cared for and better prepared to resist the effects of time. Hydrating and nourishing ingredients can make a remarkable difference in reducing the visibility of wrinkles and preserving the skin’s natural glow and suppleness.

Wrinkles are a part of life, but with the right care – both inside and out – you can support your skin in aging with strength, balance, and beauty.
